Suzzanne Uhland Highlights Importance of Professional Mentorship

Profiles in Diversity Journal honored Suzzanne Uhland, a partner at the San Francisco and Newport Beach offices of O’Melveny & Myers LLP, in its 2010 edition of Women Worth Watching. As described by Catalyst President and CEO Ilene Lang in her foreword to the 8th annual issue, the yearly listing highlights women who “represent the best of what is possible for organizations that embrace gender diversity” and the strategic value of gender diversity to business success. In doing so, Profiles in Diversity seeks to recognize women who serve as positive role models for both male and female upcoming professionals.

Suzzanne Uhland received the honor for her work in O’Melveny’s restructuring practice, which she chairs, as well as in the firm’s policy committee. In her personal essay, she addressed the importance of professional mentorship to career success, describing the ways in which her own role models helped her discover her strong suits and expand her perspectives. She stressed that, although she originally perceived professionalism as closely tied to toughness, such mentoring relationships are crucial to one’s professional development.

Ms. Uhland noted that her mentors encouraged her to consider various perspectives before making decisions and described how she draws on this guidance to mentor young professionals at O’Melveny & Myers. By reflecting on the unique perspectives of junior lawyers, she has had success in imparting skills such as teamwork and communication, which lead to positive results for the entire firm.

Open A Door Foundation SHE-CAN Scholarship Supports Female Leadership

Open A Door Foundation pic The Open A Door Foundation (OAD) is a nonprofit dedicated to providing educational opportunities for young women from post-conflict countries. With the assistance of partners such as Generation Rwanda and local school counselors, it seeks promising young women who have excelled academically and works to help them access higher education, supporting their development into change-inspiring global leaders.

OAD accomplishes its goals via college preparatory classes, which help students prepare for both the SAT/TOEFL exams and the college application process in general, as well as through mentorship opportunities. Additionally, the organization sponsors scholarship programs such as SHE-CAN: Supporting Her Education Changes a Nation.

Focusing on underserved regions impacted by conflict and poverty, SHE-CAN aims to empower women in regions most in need of effective female leadership and gender equality. SHE-CAN strives to overcome income inequality while encouraging diversity and social equality, and the program benefits from the financial involvement of universities, corporations, and individual benefactors. OAD ultimately plans to establish annual SHE-CAN scholarship programs at 50 institutions of higher education across the United States.
